The Externals - Chapter Twelve

Like everyone other person in the hall did, I admired Halima as she stepped into the hall with my costumes on to play the role of Queen Esther in the Bible. Obviously, the drama they acted was centered on pride - How Queen Vashti lost her position because of it. It was interesting but surprisingly didn't get the audience attention like the presentation Aza and I did. Admiring Halima wasn't something that was so pleasing to me, but I just had to. Her high forehead, full lips and enchanting eyeballs made her standout among others in our school. I would have loved to make fun of her because she had small boobs and a flat butt but there was no point in doing so when the boy I loved was head over heels for her. On the last day of our fasting and prayer programme, it was mandatory for the every student and staff of GMC to move around the school's building seven times. While doing that, we would sing the "Wall of Jericho" song. During this period, I used to be scared t

The Externals - Chapter Eleven

Once upon a time, there lived a girl who was taller than most of the boys in her class but all of a sudden, they grew taller than her. That girl was me! That incident gave those silly boys the opportunity to tease me so I was annoyed. I resolved to get back at them by gaining more height so I made beans appear often in the food time table I made then, but I could only follow it up to date for a while. As we all know, cooking beans consumes more gas or kerosene and that's not economical! Instead of wasting more of my time pondering on what to use in substituting the meal on my time table, I pulled the long bucket which I use to keep my foodstuffs to myself and brought out the black polythene containing cassava flakes for consumption. Trust me, I really enjoyed it despite the fact that I didn't was no sugar or groundnut. The blocked sachets of water my Aunt bought earlier that day and kept inside one of her coolers were remaining so I added them and was satisfied with the out

Grandma was happy to see the change in my look though Aunt Joke was skeptical about it. For the rest of the party, some of the male guests couldn't take their eyes off me but none came close to me because they knew my uncle was in the Army. A ll the same, I felt like I shouldn't have come to the party. It seemed to me that my presence was a reminder of the fact that my dad failed to give us the life deserved. "Ma'am, what will you like to eat?" One of the waiters around who had a local accent came to my table. "Jollof and fried rice with salad", I got the courage to look him in the eye and realized his identity but still had to ignore him. "Do you want fried plantain too? My neighbors brought many from the farm" Grandma said with admiration. "It's alright, grandma", I smiled. It took me a while to finish my meal because I wasn't conversant with the use of cutleries but I had to do it to blend in. After eating, I was forc

The Externals-Chapter Nine

Thursday weren't the only days we had departmental classes. What this pretty day mainly stood for was extracurricular activities. And like I once said, I was an elite member of the press club which happened to be the most boring. On the other hand, Halima was a member of the drama club which every student wanted to join because their members were good talented at telling jokes and acting of course. As for Kenny, he was a popular member of Jet Club since he donated high amounts of money for their termly projects. He was the president and derived joy in using his position to opress students. Deciding not to be a good girl anymore meant that I had to win over their club supporters to myself so I thought of doing something which later looked stupid to achieve my aim. My club wasn't on the preferred list because all our coordinators do during club meetings is point out everyone's flaws without working towards making things right. We also didn't have time to tell jokes becau
