MARIE'S HIGH -CHAPTER ELEVEN
On The Run
"Good evening, ma", Greeting was the first thing that came to my mind as I saw Grandma sitting on the only armchair in the living room.
"I don't want to ever see you near my granddaughter again, stay as far as possible from her else you'll end up in jail", She slapped Loveboy and grabbed my hand.
This time, I couldn't resist her. I followed her meekly like a sheep being led to the slaughterhouse. She didn't even wait for Aunt Simi to finish her night bath and say goodbye to us. Besides, a taxi was already waiting for us outside the apartment.
I didn't sleep a wink throughout the night. My eyes were wide open, watching the night transform into the day, and my heart was trapped with Loveboy. I wanted to give him a last look badly at Aunt Simi's house but I couldn't. I wasn't as strong as I thought. The possibility of him ignoring me forever because of what Grandma also scared me. The possibility of not being able to enjoy the fame and riches he promised anymore made me moody.
As early as 5 am, I entered my bathroom and invested more than an hour in skincare. Since I planned on apologizing to Loveboy for what happened in school, I also knocked on Bola's door to beg for a makeup kit that would make me look irresistible. I refused to ask Bola to help me apply it to avoid insults that will kill my morale, even though she asked if I needed help. I preferred using my phone to watch data-exhausting makeup practicals on YouTube in the kitchen when others were getting ready for school.
Unfortunately, Grandma stopped me from attending Marie's high with the rest. As Uncle Bayo drove out of the compound after giving me an indifferent look, the same taxi driver that brought us home the previous day appeared to give us a ride to a bus terminal. It was indeed grand and stylish. There were benches for passengers to sit while waiting for their buses, boards indicating the time when buses take off, and ATMs for passengers short on cash. Would have taken some shots if I had my phone with me but then, I'm not in the best of mood. The thought of not being able to see Loveboy again ripped my gentle soul apart. It made me feel like the most unlucky person in the world.
"Grandma, I need to use the toilet", I finally devised a means of escaping.
"Hey, do you know where it is?" She couldn't run after me too because she was suffering from Arthritis.
After satisfying nature's call, I applied some hand sanitizers on my sweaty hands and started thinking of the next step to take since I didn't have a dime on me. Just then, I saw a lady's purse fall from her bag unknowingly and helped her pick it up. Funnily enough, I wasn't even tempted to steal from her even though I needed money badly.
Sorry to disappoint you but she didn't give me tons of new one thousand naira notes as a reward for helping her or promise me a ride to wherever it was I wanted to go. She only turned out to be one of my former classmates.
"Jokotola Odunsi!" I was surprised that I could still remember her name.
Jokotola was the kind of student who skipped school for two weeks because she could not afford a new uniform in her junior final year and derived joy in lying to everyone about her social status. She claimed to have traveled to the united states without being able to provide her international passport or VISA. The luxurious apartment her father owned turned out to be a single room in a bungalow built by an external body.
"Oh! Aren't you the ghoul who wore only a pair of uniforms throughout junior high school?" She invited the spirit of laughter into the room.
"M......Did it skip your mind that my Grandma and Dad worked with the Ministry of Information?" I said proudly.
"Yeah...that old woman who wears cleaning aprons. Your Dad must have died feeling accomplished because he helped his mom out a little bit".
"How dare you!", I hit her. "They were highly respected photographers! What do you have to say for yourself? You lied about your dad being an engineer when he was just a bricklayer!"
"Excuse me, girls", A security officer came into the bathroom. " Which one of you is Nifemi Adeoye?"
LOVEBOY'S POV
I hated my English teacher more than anyone else in Marie's high because he was my mom's ally. Yet, I couldn't stop attending his class because I needed to pass his subject. While he was making corrections for the essay assignments with my other classmates, I was thinking about my best option for lunch- Bennett's fish and chips or lunch with Lauren at the place.
Benneth was a student and celebrity chef in Marie's High who had a huge crush on me and Lauren on the other hand was an Instagram babe much interested in appearing on my next music video. She was stunning, with no cap, so I couldn't ignore her even after announcing to the world that Nifemi is now my girlfriend.
"You didn't write this essay, did you?" Mr. Adebayo came to my deskside.
"What did you expect?" I got up. "It's lunchtime".
"Reminding me won't work you know. Last week we stopped at the body, right?" He was the only teacher in Marie's high who derived joy in annoying me.
Thankfully, my phone rang before I could answer and he of all people knew what that meant.
"We'll meet again", He smiled.
"Whatever ", I said to him rudely and walked out of the homeroom.
"Hello. Loveboy speaking", I answered the caller with my usual charming voice.
"It's me, Nifemi", She responded with an unsettled voice.
Everyone was expecting to see Nife and me together this morning and we've also planned a grand entrance but her grandma spoilt everything. I hated the fact that most students of Marie's high thought I left her alone because I felt threatened by her grandma's words and needed to let them know that I could get anyone I wanted.
NIFEMI'S POV
For reasons best known to her, JK decided not to snitch on me. In fact, she even lent me her phone to call Loveboy and helped me find a place to hide for some time.
When Loveboy came to save me with a dark Nike face cap covering part of his forehead and my round style of glasses, I was happy to show him off to JK who thought I was going to be a loner forever.
"Hey, I've missed you so much", he caressed my cheek
"Hmmm. Did you even make any attempt to search for me?" I pretended to be angry at him.
"Sorry. I thought you needed some space", He gave me a shopping bag. It contained the same pair of outfits he was wearing.
"Thank you so much", I blushed.
"Sure you like it?" he raised one of his eyebrows in doubt
"Of course", I examined the gifts once more.
"You two look good together ", She took a picture of us.
"Thanks. Korah, this is Jokotola Odunsi, she was my classmate in junior high school ", I was forced to introduce her.
" Hi, gorgeous", He planted a kiss on the back of her palm.
Eventually, we moved outside through an escape route and came in contact with some armed men whose identities were unknown to us.
A/N:
Have you ever been in a situation that warranted running away from home?
I haven't been and I don't ever pray to be in that kind of situation.
Nevertheless, if you have been in that kind of situation, you don't have to feel too bad about it. We all make mistakes. The most important thing is learning from our mistakes and trying as much as possible to avoid repeating them.
Yours teenfictionly,
Eniola Oluwamuyiwa.
